George and the tax-avoiding rich

12 Apr

A good piece in yesterday’s Guardian by Larry Elliott. He likens Osborne to Claude Rains as Captain Renault in Casablanca: Renault says he is “shocked, shocked” to find gambling going on in the American Bar, as he is handed his winnings by one of the staff.

Elliott continues: “It comes as a revelation to Osborne, apparently, that wealthy people in the UK are exploiting loopholes so that they pay little or no tax…Incredible. Who would’ve imagine that people got up to such things?…If [Osborne} is genuinely surprised by the tax arrangements of the well-heeled in the UK, he has either been living in a cave for the past 20 years or is unfit for his current post.” I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Today’s picture

A lot of the signs I’ve photographed in the US are food related (no surprise there). This was taken at Blue Hill fair in Maine.Image
